Making of boats/ships

Bonaire has had an industry for the construction of sailing ships since the middle of the 19th century. This industry has become very large, especially in the first 40 years of the 20th century. The island had several shipyards, called 'valve', for shipbuilding. The grand masters in this industry were Jan E. (Kachi) Craane, Jules Hellmund, Jose Marchena and Arturo Martijn. The ships built on Bonaire were known for their quality. Ships were even made for Venezuela.
